This poignant film is told from two different narratives and tells the story of a mother and son who were separated during the genocide against Muslims during the harrowing Bosnian war. Esma, who has now built a new life in the United States, is faced with the devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, which threatens to erase the memories of her son she has been trying to find ever since the separation. Esma races against time with urgency to locate her son before everything’s lost, but unbeknownst to her, her son Amir is also on a parallel quest, looking for her. Amir is now a successful cellist in France who struggles to fill the void within him, as he is constantly reminded of the loss and horrific events of the war that follow him like a shadow, only deepening his loneliness and depression. As both look for each other, Amir and Esma reflect on the time they had together and their journey to where they are today.

Described by critics as poignant, heartbreaking, and “an incredibly emotional and grounded story,” this coming-of-age tale centers on a child ostracized for his interests, able to confide in only one true friend.
Set over a single summer afternoon in 1997, the story follows two eleven-year-olds, Maisie and Archie, as they share candid conversations about growing up and the awkward, looming adolescence they are both quietly terrified of.
Filled with humor and childlike innocence, the narrative unfolds through their conversation as they navigate feelings of isolation and belonging in a world where neither quite fits—each in their own way. What begins as playful, honest talk ultimately leads to a confession far larger than either of them can fully understand, or know how to handle.
